Usually, children’s bedrooms are the smallest and most neglected rooms of a home, especially in apartments. If the room is shared by more than one child, the space may resemble a toy store rather than a bedroom. The most common set-up in a small children’s room shared by more than one child is the well-known bunk bed, a small office, closets and, at best, a chest of drawers.
If you have a bunk bed or a different type of bed, all you can do is to make sure you get the most out of the room’s space. Find some ideas below:
Bunk bed or (low) bed
Whichever you have from the two, make sure that there are drawers at the bed’s lower part, or at least some type of space that can be used as storage for toys or other items which are frequently used. The child can easily access their toys by having the storage space at ground level or at a low height.
If you are thinking of purchasing a new bed for your little one but you are not yet sure if it should have an extra bed or a storage space below, just ask yourselves which option will be most frequently used. If there is another option for sleepovers at your home then your choice is easy.
Wall Indentations
If the bedroom has wall indentations, then why don’t you use them to display toys that have emotional value, like teddy bears, dolls or toy cars?
Wardrobe
Many children bedroom wardrobes are designed for adults rather for children, which are more suitable for longer clothes instead of having additional shelves for toys as well.
Remember, that children’s wardrobes are not exclusively designed for clothes’ storage. You will notice that they are sturdier to hold more weight: take advantage of this, by placing boxes for toys, such as Lego bricks. Also, consider if additional shelves or drawers can be placed.
Wall shelves or Bookcase?
Shelves should never be placed above the bed for safety reasons. It is best to place a small shelf unit or a bookcase than adding wall shelves all over the bedroom. A bookcase is more stable and it will definitely hold more items than 3-4 shelves. Besides, when you child grows older, they will have space to store their books!
