The cot bed
In the first six months of your baby’s life there will be a lot of sleeping involved! Therefore, it is important that your baby will enjoy frequent and sufficient sleeping – its cot bed is the most important element of this process.
Take note of the following:
- Ensure that the cot bed’s frame is robust and absolutely secure, and that nothing is hung on the nearest wall.
- Do not hang trinkets and “charms” on the cot bed as there is a risk of them being swallowed by your baby.
- Do not place the cot bed under or in front of windows since sunlight rarely contributes to a good, deep sleep.
- Carefully select the mattress ensuring that it fits the cot bed perfectly and has robust edges so that the baby’s legs or hands cannot get stuck between the mattress and the frame of the bed.
- Make sure that the mattress is not too soft, as it should support the baby rather than “hug” its body. It must be hypoallergenic, friendly to the sensitive infant skin and preferably have a cotton coating.
The Changing Unit
The changing unit has to be chosen by having in mind that your baby will grow up fast so that throughout the months is comfortable for it. Make sure its sides are also raised enough to hold any sudden motions of the baby.
In addition, prefer a changing unit with storage space in order to be with your baby at all times when you clean it up.
The lighting
Although it is important that the room is bright with natural sunlight, some additional lighting is absolutely necessary. Just make sure its intensity and colour are as close as possible to natural light.
If you need to install a new lighting, make sure that its focus does not hit cot bed directly; instead, it should be diffused into the room as smoothly as possible. The same applies to the table lamps or floor lamps.
Friendly and most importantly, clean environment
It is vital to thoroughly ventilate the baby’s room and covers every day! Open the windows at least twice a day, at appropriate times, regardless of the weather. Weather conditions will determine the duration and the way they stay open, not whether they will open.
To reduce the amount of dust that accumulates in the room, be sure the surfaces and accessories be kept to the minimum. Do not use air-conditioning as its filters may not have been cleaned properly.
Also choose furniture with smooth surfaces that do not hold dust and dirt and are easy to clean.
